Thought I would share some of the best books I have found on this sub over the years and why I enjoyed them. You will probably see these books recommended often here as I have I d recommended them to anyone.
Annihilation by Jeff Vandermeer –
A book about the unknown and weirdness. I started reading this one Saturday night and at 3am I was still going. Very weird and strange and has an underlying sense of dread between the words. Loved it. The Alex Garland movie on netflix is excellent as well, a based on rather than direct adaptation.
Stoner by John Edward Williams –
A book about life both lived and unlived. I tried few times to read this and found it boring and couldn’t get into it, then during COVID pandemic when life was mental I read it and loved it. The slice of University life following this professor through the ups and downs of it all, the daily battles, the small stories that make a life. Highly recommend.
East of Eden by John Steinbeck –
A book about relationships, love and lack of love. A classic in the American literary cannon, a masterpiece of writing that pulls you in. Was shocked at how good Steinbeck builds up a world around the characters and their relationships, the dialogue between them so sharp and meaningful. Looking forward to Grapes of Wrath.
The Beach by Alex Garland –
Re read this recently and thought I would include despite not seeing it often on the sub. Alex Garland is a genius, 28 days later, annihilation, Devs, and upcoming civil war movie. This was his first novel and so brilliant. About a young man who finds himself in a paradise island community off Thailand where it all starts to go wrong. A gen x classic, written in first person that puts you right in and explores themes around escaping reality of life, growing up and idealism. I have read this 3x in my life and as I get older I see the characters and story different each time.
