I get why Andy Weir works. There can be an instant human connection with someone when the narrative is 1st person, present tense. You jump right into it and it can be compelling and you want to know what happens next! But for me, it quickly wore thin. It felt like a parlor trick that keeps getting used and, well, you get it. Please stop telling the joke. Too many cute asides.
I did want to know what happened so I finished it, but I resented it. This made me think of someone’s post the other day talking about not liking present tense narrative. I immediately thought of PHM, which I was reading, and a light bulb went ding! I think it’s the present tense that wears me out.
