Do you have one of those? or perhaps a few? I do.

The first that comes to mind is *Common Sons*, by Ronald L. Donaghe. I don’t want to diss it: it’s a competently written book. A good premise, compelling characters, pretty well constructed, a decent sense of place. It’s a decent enough book. It’s his first, and is definitely a bit clunky in places. Toward the end there’s a bit of recaping done with “as you know” conversations, which is quite unnecessary. The pacing is fine, I suppose, but I think could be improved. Like, it’s decent, certainly not bad.

But I love it unreasonably, and re-read it fairly often as comfort reading, because I first read it at *exactly the right time* and because it’s still probably the only book I’ve read that properly captured exactly the same internal struggles as I’ve experienced. I’ve read a few books about internalized homophobia, even a few about religious internalized homophobia, but this was the only one which, to my mind, properly evoked the experience.

Anyway, what’s your book that you love more than you “should”?
