When you’re reading book reviews, what do people do that get on your nerves?
For instance, I’ve noticed a trend where readers give negative reviews to books solely because a villain character made choices that angered them. That always strikes me as really misguided when judging a book. It’s literally the villain’s role to be an antagonist, and present obstacles to the protagonist, especially if those are bad things. It makes me feel like people sort of miss the whole point of reading a book or storytelling in general.
On a somewhat related note, I’ve also read bad reviews for books because the main character or narrator doesn’t align with personal social views, or disagrees with the reasoning or logic in how they’re presented from a philosophical standpoint (rather than a consistency one).
What are some of your book review tropes that make you wince?
