Growing up I didn’t have a lot of encyclopedias or science magazines and I feel like I missed a lot of the fun of learning that I see so many children experiencing. My goal for the next year is to get into the subjects that always interested me, but never got to properly study.
The problem is that I am too old (highschool senior) for the children stuff, but too young for the heavy academic stuff. I want something that still retains that feeling of childish wonder. Something that would enthrall me without sacrificing information. Basically, something that reads like a cool documentary and not like a school textbook.
Here are the things that interest me and some of the potential choices I’ve gathered so far (though, I’m not set on any of them)
Astronomy: Cosmos by Carl Sagan
Zoology
Marine biology
Oceanography
Mythology: Mary Litchfield’s The World Mythology Collection, Jake Jackson’s books on mythology. I’d say I am at an intermediate level, so Neil Gaiman’s Norse Myths or D’Aulaire don’t do it for me.
Palenteology: Your Inner Fish by Neil Shubin,
History: I’m open to any region, from any period, but I’m more interested in the ancient side of history or something that focusses more on the societal side instead of very specific events, but anything is welcomed.
Cryptozoology: I barely know anything except for the basics, so I can do with something for a lower level.
Happy New Year Y’all!
