I just finished Fairytale by Stephen King, and while I enjoyed the read overall and found it quite fun, I was just sooooooo distracted by the teenage protagonist’s characterization. I’m a high school teacher and literally not a single thing about Charlie Reade rang true to my lived experiences of modern teenagers. Sometimes I would try to stretch my imagination to the most gifted, Luddite of a teenager I could imagine, and even then, it was too big a reach. I mostly justified the choices within the context of a story that’s designed to mimic the flow and style of a classic Fairytale.

Have you read other books where an important character was written in a way that really took you out of the story? Did they feel like they were in the wrong time? Sort of like “men writing women” but a lot broader than that description.
