    I am in a small book club with my friends and we’ve been taking it in turns to pick. It’s my turn to pick the next one and I’m struggling because our tastes vary quite a bit.

    It’s not that they aren’t keen to try something new – that’s the whole point – but I know they’re nervous about my pick because they feel like I read ‘cleverer’ books. I don’t actually think that’s true. They’re into cheesy romance and thriller chart books – and I am quite happy to read those too, easy reading and fun! I just wouldn’t usually buy or borrow them.

    The books that I’ve read alone recently and given 5 stars are;

    The Road – Cormac McCarthy
    The Underground Railroad – Colson Whitehead
    Nightbitch – Rachel Yoder
    I Who Have Never Known Men – Jacqueline Harpman
    The Dangers of Smoking in Bed – Mariana Enriquez
    Paradais – Fernanda Melchor
    All the Lovers in the Night – Mieko Kawakami
    Sorrow & Bliss – Meg Mason

    Mainstream, extremely popular books that I don’t think most are exactly tough to read but not on the Colleen Hoover, Emily Henry easy reading.

    I want to suggest a book I also haven’t read but nothing they’ll completely hate or find tiresome to finish so I’m looking for recommendations that are kind of in between?

    I was thinking maybe a book by Otessa Moshfegh (I’ve only read MYORAR) or Sayaka Murata (I haven’t read any of) but if anyone has some suggestions they feel we’d all enjoy I’d love to hear them!

    Also if anyone thinks those books won’t fly don’t be shy on telling me haha.

    No genre for me is vetoed although I’m not a big romance fan, I think sticking to fiction though.
