I often use digital media from the public library, also Audible’s selections that are included with membership. Both seem to have a large proportion of books that are part of a series. (Annoying with the library because volume one is usually not available).
Why is that? Are publishers risk averse and of a mind that the series format brings repeat purchases? Or do libraries get reduced purchase price for buying a whole series? Or are more authors writing that way?
I’m 75. I don’t remember series being common in years gone by. OK, there was Lord of the Rings, and some prolific authors (think, Agatha Christie) carried protagonists from one book to the next. Nor does it seem like there are that many series when I browse the shelves.
Or am I just imagining things?
