This year I decided to expand my reading repertoire by diving into classic novels, novels often hailed as literary masterpieces. And whilst I can safely say that many of them are well written, use very sophisticated language, have decent characters or are well constructed, I am finding many of them underwhelming. In a lot of cases I am finding they take a very long time to get to the point or the crux of the story, and could have been shorter and more concise and therefore hold my interest. I have found that some classic novels start well and end well but the middle is packed with unnecessary characters and conversations that really have no bearing on the outcome of the story.
Has anyone else had this experience? Alternatively…what I am missing here?
