I’m trying to get my son more into reading. I have a feeling he’d be more into non-fiction (like I am) than fiction (that other family members try to foist on him). He’s always had what seems to be a creative engineer’s brain — e.g., building cool train track layouts (as a toddler), then Lego (as a young kid), and for the past while, any video games involving creative design (e.g., prison architect, city skylines, planet coaster).

Any recommendations on the best nonfiction science / engineering books for early teens? Something that won’t feel like homework to him, but will be interesting, and will hopefully start to inspire a love of reading/ learning in him. He seems brilliant in this one particular area, yet struggles academically. I’m struggling with how to help him realize that his predispositions will be an advantage (as an adult / in a career) if he can learn to channel them / realize there’s some overlap with the things he is and will be learning in high school.
