    4. Those fentanyl ads always throw me off.

I was probably close to that age when I read the Hobbit, the Chronicles of Narnia, the Chronicles of Prydain, and the Dark is Rising sequence. My 11 year old really likes Wings of Fire. I’ll also suggest the Bartimaeus trilogy, Fablehaven, and the Spiderwick Chronicles.

My son is 11 and he loved “Middle School The Worst Years of my Life” by James Patterson. Theres a couple of twists you don’t see coming, really good job of making the characters seem real and relatable. There’s a movie too but the movie is almost nothing like the book, the book is light years better.

How to Train Your Dad by Gary Paulsen, Lemons by Melissa Savage, Tiger Rising by Kate Dicamillo, Percy Jackson series, Insignificant Events in the Life of a Cactus by Dusti Bowling

      What does he like?

If he’s into fantasy, my son looooves the Geronimo Stilton Kingdom of Fantasy books. He’s seven, but we read them to him. Reading level would be right for an 11-year-old to read himself.

I second the recommendation for Hatchet up above. My Side of the Mountain is a book in a similar vein, though it starts without the tragedy.

Red wall would be another good option.

Gordon Korman has some great funny books for kids that age.

    8. What are some of his interests? I’m a K-6 school librarian and I’ve got boys that like slice of life contemporary books, sport’s, scary, fantasy, mystery…they are all different!

The Last Kids on Earth series might be fun for him – a few kids banding together after a monster/zombie apocalypse, quick moving plots and plenty of humor.

I read Cujo when I was around 11 and it was pretty amazing. It opened me to a whole world of horror I was too young to read.

The Dark is Rising series definitely. The protagonist is 11, and it’s a wonderful series full of mythology and lore, even King Arthur and the holy grail! It was my favorite as a kid. Still do a readalong every year on the dark is rising group on Facebook. The BBC even did an excellent radio adaptation last year! He could listen to it as well.

    16. Sounds cliché, but I hated reading when I was 11, until I read the first Harry Potter book. I haven’t stopped reading since! You can think whatever you want about JK Rowling, but there’s nothing more magical than what she did with the Harry Potter serie.

Mom of 10 year old boy here: here are some books/series he’s liked.

Harry Potter, Narnia, Wingfeather Saga, The Hobbit, How to Train Your Dragon, The 39 Clues, Farmer Boy, The City of Ember, Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s Library, The Mysterious Benedict Society, Gregor the Overlander

    18. Caleb_Trask19 on

Gregor the Overlander, it’s the start of a five book series and is an earlier series by Suzanne Collins who wrote Hunger Games.

I always recommend “his dark materials” trilogy to this age group. Read it right after Harry Potter when I was 11 and it’s been one of my all time favorites.

The Percy Jackson series. I was OBSESSED with them as a kid! Same with Harry Potter

    21. TraditionalDetail617 on

The “Ranger’s Apprentice” series by John Flanagan and the “Young Samurai” series by Christopher Bradshaw are both fantastic for this age.

    22. The Gregor the Overlander series. I used to teach upper elementary and middle language arts and got many a reluctant reader tweenager hooked on this series.

    23. Gregor the overlander series the main character is around his age, and I used to be obsessed with them when I was his age.
