I was probably close to that age when I read the Hobbit, the Chronicles of Narnia, the Chronicles of Prydain, and the Dark is Rising sequence. My 11 year old really likes Wings of Fire. I’ll also suggest the Bartimaeus trilogy, Fablehaven, and the Spiderwick Chronicles.

I loved the Ranger’s Apprentice and Percy Jackson series around that age!

My son is 11 and he loved “Middle School The Worst Years of my Life” by James Patterson. Theres a couple of twists you don’t see coming, really good job of making the characters seem real and relatable. There’s a movie too but the movie is almost nothing like the book, the book is light years better.

What does he like?
If he’s into fantasy, my son looooves the Geronimo Stilton Kingdom of Fantasy books. He’s seven, but we read them to him. Reading level would be right for an 11-year-old to read himself.
I second the recommendation for Hatchet up above. My Side of the Mountain is a book in a similar vein, though it starts without the tragedy.
Red wall would be another good option.
Gordon Korman has some great funny books for kids that age.

What are some of his interests? I’m a K-6 school librarian and I’ve got boys that like slice of life contemporary books, sport’s, scary, fantasy, mystery…they are all different!

The Last Kids on Earth series might be fun for him – a few kids banding together after a monster/zombie apocalypse, quick moving plots and plenty of humor.

The Dark is Rising series definitely. The protagonist is 11, and it’s a wonderful series full of mythology and lore, even King Arthur and the holy grail! It was my favorite as a kid. Still do a readalong every year on the dark is rising group on Facebook. The BBC even did an excellent radio adaptation last year! He could listen to it as well.

Sounds cliché, but I hated reading when I was 11, until I read the first Harry Potter book. I haven’t stopped reading since! You can think whatever you want about JK Rowling, but there’s nothing more magical than what she did with the Harry Potter serie.
