I have just finished reading chapter 4 of The Double. This is the first book of his that I’m reading. I’m confused about how the end of chapter 3 leads to the beginning of Chapter 4. In chapter 3, Goliadkin is denied entrance to a party hosted by Olsufy Ivanovich, and he then leaves and goes to a private room in a tavern to order dinner. The chapter ends with him sitting in a chair in his room, head in hands, “trying to resolve something about his current situation” (paraphrased). Then chapter 4 begins with him back at the party trying to sneak in through the back hallway. Of course, he could have just walked back to the party between chapters, but that last sentence of chapter 3 kind of makes me think that he was already there hiding in the back hallway, that that was his current situation that he was was trying to figure out, and that he never went to a tavern at all. I suppose it’s pretty insignificant now that I’m writing it out but it’s bugging me.
