My go-to example is *Stargirl* by Jerri Spinelli. I read the whole book thinking the narrator was a girl, and that it was a story about coming out as a lesbian. Turns out the narrator’s a boy and it’s a semi-sexist manic pixie dream girl story. Sigh.
Also: the *Alex Cross* series by James Patterson. Once I got old enough to understand objectification, and why bad things always happen to all the women in his books, I couldn’t enjoy those anymore.
