So many 19th-century books had beautiful, original illustrations. I think it really enhances the reading experience.
If novels were illustrated today, it would provide a new experience for readers, and give illustrators paying gigs. For example, imagine the RomCom genre, but with your favorite illlustrator providing a cute little depiction of a scene every ten pages or so.
