I recently received a very nice copy of a book (one I already have but that’s fine) for Christmas from a friend. I collect this book as I wrote my dissertation on it and want to start a collection of all the copies and versions I can find, but my friend wrote a message inside of the book, something along the lines of “to me, i know you collect these books, don’t you think this character reminds you of your partner, love you, from her”. I understand the sentiment of it all, but I can’t help but look at this beautiful book, and open up to the title page and see this messages scrawled in pen from someone who doesn’t understand the book and really dislike it. Perhaps if it was a loved one like a grandparent or parent or partner I’d feel different! How do you feel about someone writing a message in a book they gift you?
