The Phantom of the Opera is a title that carries great fame, we have seen many adaptations for it, both in plays and films. I really like the 1925 film adaptation with Lon Chaney. The Phantom of the Opera is a man who was judged on his appearance all his life due to his ugliness, but he possessed a genius talent for music and longed to be loved through it.
Erik has a wonderful voice, he is Christine’s Angel of Music. At first we saw him as a monster who kidnaps the opera singer Christine DaaĆ©, but as the book progresses we discover his human side. He was a genius! A genius who had to hide and apply tricks to exercise his great talent; just because he was ugly, deformed. The Opera was his world, and he had control over it. Because he is disfigured, Erik remains hidden in the back of an opera house. He was going crazy, and oscillated between monster and fascinating figure… he just missed being loved. The passion that becomes obsessive and the unhealthy jealousy he has for Christine.
What the absence or lack of love can do to human beings is well portrayed in this work, observing its characters and their choices.
Unlike Gwynplaine in the man who laughs who had his love reciprocated by Dea, Erik was a lonely person like Quasimodo.
