i’ve only recently gotten back into reading, but it’s hard to find horror books for myself because i’m the pickiest person i know.

for example, and **slight spoiler warning for the “asylum” trilogy**, i adored “asylum” and “sanctum” by madeleine roux, but not “catacomb”. i loved the main character essentially getting possessed and i was waiting for more info on the warden’s experiments. more details, more stories about his victims, just more about that. the cult part wasn’t something i expected, but still having that connection to the warden made it passable for me. the third book took a dive and seemingly forgot about the warden entirely, which was really disappointing.

my absolute favourite book that i’ve read thus far is “things have gotten worse since we last spoke”. the gore, the just straight up insanity from both characters. it got so much worse way too fast (and i mean that in the most positive way possible), but i just wish it was longer and even more horrible. a book like that would honestly be ideal. i also loved the format of it all just being emails and messages between them. they describe only the most important parts, not how green the trees were, and how the clouds seemed darker than yesterday.

i find it impossible to figure out what exactly i like in terms of a more specific subgenre (my best guess is i like psychological horror with (optionally) really truly disgusting gore), but hopefully someone with more knowledge on the subject could help me out 🙂
