I realized recently that unlike so many people, reading is not relaxing for me. It’s hard for me to focus and also read and digest and imagine scenes.
This is especially true for fiction. Imagining a described scene or a character is so difficult. I just lose track and start thinking about something else.
It’s a bit different for non-fiction. If I am curious about something or if something interests me, I can get lost in the writing. Nevertheless, it’s not relaxing: I am on a high alert mode, deep into it. I enjoy it nevertheless, like I enjoy a good conversation over coffee.
For fiction, I find watching movies and TV series much more natural and relaxing for me, especially rewatching the favorites. On the other hand, I cannot stand documentaries – I get lost often (though I appreciate the visuals that let me imagine a certain era or place e.g.)! I love podcasts of all kinds: they are relaxing and also intellectually stimulating. Best of both worlds.
Anyone with any similar experience? Are there elements of ADHD or something here? Any insights about this type of pattern?
