Theophile Gautier is a 19th century French author but many of his stories are set earlier times. I’d also recommend François Coppée-A Romance of Youth, Ten-Tales and The Lost Child some of which I believe are set in the 19th century. Also you might like Rafael Sabatini -Scaramouche set in the French revolution.

If you are looking for novels set in that time period, the below 2 are probably some of the more well known ones. Not sure about nonfiction.
[The Count of Monte Cristo](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/7126) by Alexandre Dumas
[Les Míserables](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/24280) by Víctor Hugo
