I am 44 and I have lots of friends who adore Pratchett but I have not read a single one of his. I grew up in the west of England and in my final year of primary school (in 1989/1990) Terry came to our class and spent all afternoon with my small class of twenty children. I’d heard of him but didn’t really know who he was. Anyway we were all told we had to ask him one question. I couldn’t think of a question that I considered any good but I alighted one that was pretty much all I could think of. Terry stood at the front of the class and when it came time to ask my question I felt really embarrassed but had to go for it. His response was so epic (“that is such a good question” is how he started his answer) that I felt validated and about 100 feet tall. I will never forget.

But still I have not read a single one of his books. I am, for whatever reason, adverse to fantasy writing that has elves, orcs and wizards as the characters (I couldn’t finish any Lord of the rings books) but feel it’s about time I gave it a go.

So what would you recommend as an accessible Pratchett first book?
