I’ve just finished *How High We Go in the Dark* by Sequoia Nagamatsu, and absolutely loved the way it’s formatted – it’s a series of short stories, but each story builds on the world of the previous stories and characters are related or referenced between stories. This is the second book I’ve read this year that uses this format – the other was *Revenge* by Yōko Ogawa. In that book, the overall storytelling wasn’t as linear but there were references to characters from between stories so you could create a sort of character map as you went.

I’ve read plenty of short story anthologies and single-author collections, but nothing else that created what is essentially a full-length novel through short stories. Has anyone else read these, or other books that are written in the same style? How did you feel about it as a narrative device? And does anyone know if there’s a specific name for books written in this format, with the stories all being connected? I’d love to find more, but I’m not sure what search terms to use!
