In my reading experience, Dostoevsky always delivers. The creature in Frankenstein stood out to me, though I read that a while ago. Harry Haller from Steppenwolf too. Jean Valjean comes to mind (though I haven’t yet finished Les Mis). Emerence from The Door by Magda Szabó is one of the most compelling and memorable characters I’ve read.
I have a lot of gaps in my literary knowledge, but I do know my favorite part of a book is its characters, so I’m looking for ideas on where to start reading next year.
