The more depressing/dark the better. TIA.
Edit to add that I just finished Bunny by Mona Awad last week based on seeing it recommended here so many times and loved it. I can see it getting recommended here again so wanted to make note of that.

*Circe* by Madeline Miller is a great take on this, it’s pretty depressing but ultimately hopeful. Obviously based on the Greek myth. She is literally exiled to a little island most of the story and struggles to relate to other immortals.
*My Year of Rest and Relaxation* is contemporary about a depressed, rich hot girl who just wants to sleep a whole year. Much bleaker and a lot of people absolutely hate the protag. A bit like Bunny in that it’s funny but I think it’s a dryer sort of humor.
*You Too Can Have a Body Like Mine* is weird and unsettling and hard to describe, but generally about a woman who feels alienated from modern society. Depressing-ish and unsettling, my friend actually found it a bit much because it was too relatable, haha.
*Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine* is about mental illness and trauma and loneliness, but it’s a much lighter read than the previous three. It’s the most Oprah’s Book Club feeling, if that makes sense.
