Long story short, I’ve wanted to read And Quiet Flows the Don for over 6 years. I picked up a translation by Stephen Garry and failed to notice that his translation is an extremely abridged version of the novels until I finished reading it. No idea how it has a 4.3/5 on Amazon given that this version feels very jumpy and has a resolution for about 0 of its main characters, or why it has a Penguin Classics tag when last I remembered they publish complete books. Literally the last you hear about the character the entire plot line for the first quarter+ of the novel is about is halfway through the book with 0 resolution, followed by occasional thoughts about her. But anyways, I was wondering if anyone knows where I can find a copy of a good translation or one that has the missing part(s?) that this translation lacks. There seems to be no common consensus or discussion on where to find it or what versions to read. Some have all 4 volumes at 2800+ pages, others have books that are 1000ish pages… Any advice will be much appreciated.
