Hi there. I know there are many fantastic novels that feature the theme of loneliness, but I have a rather specific craving and I’m hoping for more targeted suggestions.
I’m looking for a book where a character feels lonely/isolated and different from those around them. More specifically, I’d really like to read something about a character who is dealing with relationships with emotionally immature people (parents, partner, etc.) and trying to escape and figure out how to grow and make a life for themselves.
I’ve been reading a lot of self help books and reflecting on the relationships in my life, but I really want to read something with a character that I can relate to that might give me some hope. I’m okay with darker themes, depression, trauma, etc., but I would like a complex character that I can sort of root for. It might be nice to read something on the more positive side of things (think Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine), but I’m also open to suggestions that don’t have a perfectly happy ending. I guess I just want something well written that makes me feel a bit less alone, or less alone in feeling alone (too meta?).
I read a wide range of books and am open to suggestions in any genre of fiction. Feel free to throw in some self-help titles if you think of something relevant, but I am mainly looking for fiction at the moment. 🙂
Thanks in advance for your time and suggestions.
