My mom is a 45 year old Christian who likes Agatha Christie, Rex Stout, and Elisabeth Elliot. She likes books about self help and marriage, but I’d like to get her a book she can enjoy. Maybe start her on a new author? She likes mystery but also romance, especially old fashioned romance like black and white movies from the 80s. I’d appreciate any suggestions!

    1. If she likes her mysteries low-gore and definitely not ‘spicy’, then 1970s writer Mary Stewart could suit! She wrote exciting, pacy mysteries with an old-fashioned romance at their core – so best of both worlds. There is some violence but not much and it’s not graphic. My mum loved these!

Try: Airs Above The Ground, My Brother Michael, The Gabriel Hounds and there are lots more.

    2. She might like The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton. An Australian woman inherits a house in Cornwall, the novel weaves together the stories of three women across different time periods that are connected by a mysterious abandoned garden in Cornwall. A little mystery, a little romance, and a very good story. I am sure she will love whatever you give her and happy birthday to your mom!
