My partner has just gotten into reading. They are really liking the price of thorns trilogy. They say that they like the darkness/gritiness of it. They want to read more, but are unsure what else will have that same vibe.

    1. The Broken Earth trilogy is so dark that most people’s primary complaint is that it’s too depressing. The entire story takes place after an apocalyptic event and the main character’s story starts off with her husband murdering one of their children and running off with the other. Lots of suffering and death.

    2. Another recommendation might be the night angel series, it starts with the way of shadows. It is about a street urchin growing up who wants to be an assassin.

Another recommendation here for the broken Earth trilogy, I am actually rereading it for the third time because I love it so much. You can get so into character and what the characters problems are and the author keeps bringing it right back down to well everybody else is literally dying and this is what you are thinking about?

Another idea might be the scholomance series, it is brand new and sort of like Harry Potter but darker and harder and grittier. If he likes the idea of a school series but he wants it to be more weird, there is a book series sort of like Narnia where they go to the world of their favorite books but it is dark and gritty and Magic doesn’t solve their problems, this book series is called The Magicians by Lev grossman (also a series on Syfy and Netflix).

i fucking LOVE **The Prince of Thorns**! jorg ancrath is my favorite villain of ALL TIME. it’s in my top 5 books of all time. this book was unputdownable. been trying to find something similar to it ever since. man, i really need to read this again!

**And I Darken** by Kiersten White is a gender-swapped retelling of Vlad the Impaler. it’s not as dark and gritty as **The Prince of Thorns** but it’s very, very, very good and the lead character, Lada, is an absolute menace.
