Like many other people, I read Girl With A Dragon Tattoo years ago on a recommendation. Like many other people, I loved it. Like many other people, I read the second. Unfortunately, I did not love that book.

The second book was not nearly as engaging as the first. There’s a scene early on where Liz Salander gets breast implants and checks herself out in a mirror. If anything my biggest problem with the first book is that every *single* woman this middle-aged journalist meets wants to jump his bones. And the second seemed like it would take a similar approach, but without any of the intrigue, mystery, or charm of the first.

And so I didn’t read the third book, not for a long time. I picked it up earlier this year out of curiousity, and a fond memory of the first book, and I was blown away! This book (The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest) picks up right where the second leaves off, meaning it’s hard to skip that one. But it had a lot of the charm, mystery, and suspense of the first book all over again. A lot of the tension was about mundane office politics as people switch from one magazine to a rival, or investigate articles that lead down deep dangerous rabbit holes. I loved it! It still had the fact where the main character is irresistible to all women, but this book left me wanting more in the same vein.

If you’re like me and put down the series after the second, consider picking up the third — you may be surprised.
