I got all the way to when they’re preparing for Mike to meet the Secretary General. At that point I was thinking “C’mon, this went too far a few chapters ago and it’s only getting worse!” and then googled the book to find that it was published in 1961.
Knowing that it wasn’t a retro-futurist novel and was instead a retro futurist novel changed the way I read it. Instead of getting frustrated with the book I would basically skim through character interactions “blah blah Jubal, stop yelling at your employees and explore the martian culture more please!”
Has anyone else had an experience like this where a misunderstanding (and eventual realization) really changed the way they read a book?
