I’ve become obsessed with the Fae recently. And when I say Fae, I mean the medieval europe, alien nightmare creatures that would pluck out your eyes just because you looked at them funny, or lure children off the path into an infinite forest for giggles, or yoink someone’s baby because their great-great-great grandfather didn’t put a bowl of milk on his windowsill for them.

Holly Black has written several excellent novels about the Fae. Most are what’s known as Urban Fantasy, but The Cruel Prince and its sequels take place in more of a medieval setting. She has written other books that have the traditional medieval settings. Terri Windling is one of the pioneers of the Urban Fantasy genre. She created a shared world anthology called Bordertown that includes really interesting takes on the Fae. Seanan McGuire has a wonderful series, the October Daye books that I absolutely adore. The only books that I’ve read recently that have the medieval setting for the Fae would be considered in the Romance genre. I much prefer the other Urban Fantasy novels that I mentioned. Other authors who have written excellent novels about the Fae are Emma Bull and Charles DeLint.
Lords and Ladies, by Terry Pratchett
Laurell Hamilton (of the *Anita Blake* series) has a series of novels about Fae – the Merry Gentry books, starting with *A Kiss of Shadows*. A lot of the books verge on softcore, so be warned if that’s not your thing, but the Fae of her stories are pretty much what you’re asking about.
