Recently had a friend say about American Psycho, “This is a gay man writing about toxic masculinity”. I read it at university and hated it, found it pretentious and one-note. We read it as a satire of, mainly, 80s materialism and consumerism, but in the tater-tot age “toxic masculinity” rang more of a bell (I mean, a pretentious, one-note bell, but still). Has that ever happened to you?
