I know the Tell-Tale Heart isn’t simply “about” misophonia, and that Edgar Allen Poe didn’t have that word in mind writing it so no need to tell me.
I have a very bad case of misophonia. Lately it’s the sound of motors that drives me insane, vehicles, lawn mowers, leaf blowers, etc. But before it was thudding, TV/music, and people’s voices from neighbors in my apartment.
I relate to the protagonist of the Tell-Tale Heart more than I care to admit, although I’d never hurt anyone over it OBVIOUSLY and generally take out my frustration on myself (or plug my ears with such loud sound so frequently I worry I’m making myself deaf). The opening few lines make me feel like /I/ need to turn myself in to the police lmao.
I’d love to read a longer story with a character who has similar dark struggles related to their reactions to noises they cannot control, especially if it’s horror or magical realism.
Thanks!
