I usually don’t google books I want to read. I knew that Sleepy Hollow always was this whole other thing, but I got on the same edition kick and decided to buy Headless Horseman…like ages ago. The only thing I knew was that the novel is somewhat historic.

Oh my god, It’s so racist. Trigger Warning, but I won’t go in much detail.

It’s basically a romantisized fantasy about Texas in time where plantations were a thing. It’s also not written well. Whole chapters that create false sence of intrigue only to lead to a character you already met, a character that doesn’t have much to do yet or will never have much to do. Whole passages about how brown someone is. ”Like Spaniards, but actually Mexicans” took several damn sentences.

The book even has a manic pixie dream girl. Well, not manic, but ”forever attractive-kind-stubborn-nobody-can-tell-her-nothing”. Everybody is in love with her, obviously. But she chooses a mysterious horse-hunter. Who is also Irish. Don’t think his folk were spared much in this book. Nobody was.

It’s shy of 600 pages, I’m on \~250 something. It’s not easy to read, but has small chapters. Doesn’t make the writing any less stupid. The author was british and has many books about that time. Gross.

I usually finish books I hate, cause a bought them and stuff. You can learn even from bad writing. But this behemoth of stupidity disrupted my whole reading flow.
