Hey guys, I was going through some of my late grandfather’s things and found an old book we went to get signed in Camp Pendleton in 2013. It’s Chris Kyle’s American Sniper. Because it has his autograph, I didn’t want to necessarily open it in the off-chance that it may get destroyed somehow someway. When I viewed some signed copies on eBay, they were going for about $2,000-$6,000.
So, naturally, I took to Reddit to see some other’s thoughts about the book before I bought a soft cover one online and I read some wild things.
I’ll start by saying I was always a huge fan of Chris Kyle. When the movie came out, I had to of watched it a thousand times. I know the script. I have some of his shirts, a steering wheel cover, etc. I’m not obsessed, but he was some of the few heroes I looked up to in my journey to enlisting into a Special Forces unit.
What I initially was looking for was some insight on the book itself (i.e how it was written and the extent of its descriptiveness). But what I found were people calling Chris a psychopath, a racist, and a liar. They said the book was nothing but egotistical lies, narcissism, and propaganda.
I’m just wondering about your thoughts on this book for those who have read it. When I met Chris in person, he seemed really cool. I was 13 when I met him and I told him I wanted to be in Special Forces. He gave me tips and pointers and he was very kind and understanding with my grandfather who had dementia at the time and kept repeating himself. I bought the book anyway just to understand it myself, but what should I expect?
