Please and thank you. And I mean something truly scary. For reference I don’t find Stephen King or authors like him scary in the least. In fact I think calling him a “horror” author is largely a misnomer, his genre falls more into “supernatural” imo. As for an example of something I did find scary, there’s The Yellow Wallpaper, by Charlotte Perkins Gilman.

I’d like something that’ll really creep me out, preferably something disturbing or uncanny, rather than gross-out, shock value, or gory. Something that’ll make me afraid of my own mind haha or on edge or paranoid.

I always found the Backrooms a great horror concept as well.

Hope this gives y’all some idea!

    1. We have always lived in the castle by Shirley Jackson.

      Come closer by Sara Gran.

I feel these are similar to The Yellow wallpaper.
I have not read the backrooms, so not sure of the genre.

    2. If you’re going for uncanny, I’d suggest H.P. Lovecraft, certain stories by Joyce Carol Oates.

Honestly, Karin Slaughter’s gory, detailed descriptions of mutilated women in her books falls into horror for me – solely because I know these are things that really happen to women by serial killers, rapists, etc.
