I like literary fiction and nature writing and am typically drawn to reflective and emotional reads. My favorite recent reads have been I’ll Give You the Sun by Jandy Nelson and Flight Behavior by Barbara Kingsolver.
!!!!! I don’t want to read a series or any mystery/thriller/horror, but any other stand alone book recommendations are welcome:)

A Painted House by John Grisham
Who Fears Death, Nnedi Okorafor! Fascinating African inspired fantasy that takes place in the desert and involves war, cultural prejudice, slavery, and a bit of an environmental undertone near the end. It was weird and beautiful and more than a little bit violent.
It’s also supposedly slated for an eventual film adaptation? We shall see.
The Offing by Benjamin Myers is lit fic and nature writing and emotional.
I doubt people will have heard of it, but you should read it for yourself.
The Wind in the Willows
Jane Eyre
Pilgrim at Tinker Creek by Annie Dillard
Desert Solitaire by Edward Abbey
[The Wandering Inn ](https://wanderinginn.com/) by pirataba
Blood Meridian by *Cormac McCarthy*
Are you only interested in fiction recommendations? Your description made me think of two non-fiction/memoir books.
