Absolutely loved it, and the first book. The love story was kinda unnecessary but other than that it was very enjoyable.
I’ve read all the criticisms of the series already, I know lots of people hate it for the characters, prose, etc. Don’t give a shit, wasn’t an issue for me.
In particular what had me interested was the immensity of the challenge that awaited humanity, and the challenge that awaited Luo Ji. The book steadily becomes more and more Lovecraftian, as we learn of how small and powerless we are in comparison to Trisolaris. Even at the point that we were “winning”, at the back of your head you’re just waiting for the other shoe to drop.
And the reveal at the end… it’s brilliant in that, you could probably have figured it out yourself, if you’d taken the axioms to their logical conclusion. But I didn’t see it coming, and it blew me away.
I love books that are mostly about ideas, and there are several in this that blew my mind to pieces. That said, I still felt for Luo and the sacrifices he made. Wonderful character. An everyday man that found a way to beat a monstrous civilization through strategy.
