A friend sent me a list of books they’ve enjoyed recently that included The Remains of the Day. I picked it up knowing nothing about it and it blew me away. It absolutely nails some themes that are meaningful to me including nostalgia and regret. I’m also a sucker for stories about social change ranging from coming-of-age stories all the way to apocalypse. TRotD captures a fascinating time in history with the decline of the great houses of Great Britian.
The final chapters of this book, where he travels to meet an old friend, are mind blowing. I couldn’t put the book down for anything.
One of my big fears in my life is not taking advantage of the limited time I have by taking chances for experience, fun and growth. The story here nails those fears.
Highly recommended!
When I finished, I couldn’t believe the book hadn’t crossed my collection yet and was shocked to find out the author also wrote another recent favorite of mine, Klara and the Sun. I know have all of his books on hold at the library.
