So I haven’t actually read Hamlet yet… I got sick in junior year so I didn’t get the chance to read Hamlet with the rest of the class and I have yet to go back and read it.

However! I have read 2 retellings of it without realizing it until I got far enough into them. In 9th or 10th grade I read the Dead Father’s Club (tbh I dont remember caring for it, it mostly made me uncomfortable), and in my first year of college I read the Story of Edgar Sawtelle (I remember really really liking this one).

Do you have any similar situations, reading something and not realizing it was a retelling when you started it? Anything, not just Shakespeare. (But if you do have Shakespeare recommendations specifically, I appreciate it too!)

Even if you have read the original works, I’d love to hear about it! Do you have favorites? Were any delightful surprises? Do you have any least favorites?

Edit: correction to title of book and added question about least favorite retellings.
