This was my first book by Tan Twan Eng, and it will not be my last. Long listed for The Booker Prize, it was a beautiful novel set in Penang, and loosely based on the life of Somerset Maugham. It’s a book about betrayal, love, loss, colonialism and ultimately choosing to live a life of our own making. I loved everything about this book. His beautiful and descriptive prose, and his ability to write fully developed characters, ones you like, others you don’t. Highly recommend!
