I’m a bit frustrated with what I’ve been able to experience so far in this genre because a lot feels very unseasoned. So far the only fantasy series i’ve enjoyed has been the Chronicles of Thomas Covenant. Initially I hoped to find something with more magic fighting and whatever but the story and character gripped me hard enough that i ended up loving it…on the other hand since I’ve tried several books like “To summon a familiar” by Marty Myers and Wraith Knight by C. T. Phipps. And some other random ones maybe i just got unlucky with whatever recommendations i chose from the internet. I want something exciting with good characters/magic but they’re written so amateurishly, a common trend is glazing over world building and rules, not painting a good picture of the world around which kinda leaves me imagining just whatever basic fantasy setting my brain can muster, The Chronicles Of Thomas covenant on the other hand did a fantastic job at world building to the point where I cared about the land. Another gripe is female characters, now im no feminist karen but the fem characters are all written as if these people have never met a woman in real life ever. Along with the main character like right now eith wraith knight feeling like the antihero fantasy of an edgy 13 year old boy. I find it hard to take it serious.
I’m a fan of isekai and fantasy anime but a lot of the tropes and whatnot work because of the colourful and visual medium and the culture it’s presented in. In literature thats also written in english a lot of these tropes come across as terribly cringy, I’d like a world where there is magic but the people are still written like…people
