I’m a professional musician and have witnessed the death of the music industry at the hands of Spotify.
The difference between Spotify and mp3s is that musicians used to earn \~$0.70 per song purchase on iTunes. They now earn \~$0.003 per stream. Musicians have had their monetary worth slashed by over 200x.
Spotify’s exploitation of musicians is criminal. Here’s to hoping policymakers will regulate Spotify and make their unsustainable business model inert.
The film/tv industry has strong unions that put up a fight this year. I hope (but don’t realistically think) that the music institutions can retroactively destroy Spotify and save the industry. Good luck to the authors in their upcoming fight.
