I read C&P earlier this year and absolutely loved it. Since then I also read NFU and The Idiot but I don’t know why I didn’t enjoy them as much.
I was puzzled by NFU’s part 1 (although since I only read the P&V translation it could be a translation problem). NFU’s part 2 was interesting, but it wasn’t amazing/life-changing for me like many other people claim.
I was very hyped up starting The Idiot, and indeed the book started with such a bang with part 1. However, I found myself getting lost with parts 2 & 3 (again, could be a translation problem? I had P&V). Part 4 was also very good but after slogging through parts 2 & 3 I was more focused on just finishing the book rather than enjoying the ending.
I also have Demons and The Brothers Karamazov on my TBR list. Given that my experience with Dostoevsky has been hit-or-miss so far, I am a little afraid that I won’t enjoy these two books as much as I hope.
I’m curious if anyone else had a similar experience with me. If so, did you enjoy Demons and/or TBK (if you’ve read them)? What should I expect? Also if anyone has suggestions on other translation alternatives besides P&V, I’d love to hear as well!
