Howdy folks! Long time lurker, first time poster!
I have a question that arose in one of my book clubs recently and thought it would be interesting to get the pulse of this community on this topic.
I’m a new member to my building’s book club which skews very differently from my demographic (just one 30ish man in a group of older women). The books we’ve read and discussed have all been historical fiction thus far. I jokingly asked if this was a themed book club that only covered WWII and this lit a heck of a discussion that has ultimately resulted in a personal assignment for me to pick the next book for the club. I mentioned /r/books and told them I would ask!
As we were discussing what books to go to next, it became clear that 1/3rd of the group wants to mix things up, 1/3rd likes the historical fiction they’ve been reading and want more, and the other third are all over the place or indifferent (lots of interesting discussion around sci-fi oddly enough).
l’ve always jumped around genres and will generally read almost anything you put in front of me.
Do you stay solely in one genre or do you enjoy a variety of writing styles? What would you recommend to a group that’s kind of stuck in historical fiction, but wants to branch out without going too far?
My knee jerk recommendation was Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, one of the ladies had read it and loved it but there was some hesitancy from a few folks who thought the next book should be more ‘grounded in reality’ (scoff).
