So I followed the classics/famous book trail for so long to find exceptionally written books. While I found quite a few, they are very often sad – i.e., they either have sad endings or are so deeply philosophical, they end up making me feel sad. For example, East of Eden had such brilliant prose but was also quite sad. Same goes for Grapes of Wrath. I’m halfway through “educated” by Tara Westover and it often leaves me feeling numb over how much tragedy the family goes through – but then again exceptional prose. On the other end of the spectrum, there’s books that have an okay prose but are a little too funny and goofy for my taste. I just want a book that has amazing prose and that doesn’t leave me sad or isn’t over-the-top funny. I often find that non-fiction books are the ones not trying to so forcefully induce a certain feeling in the reader but they are mostly sad because of the subject matter, if not downright horrifying. So I’m at a loss. Please offer your suggestions – fiction/non-fiction is appreciated. Thanks for listening to my “sad” rant.
