I’m a recently disabled person, looking for some books to help me feel more uplifted and understand other people’s experiences with disabilty better (and my own). When I say “uplifted,” I don’t mean that the story has to be totally positive or have no struggle, but that it shows someone making their way through the world with a disability without being trauma porn.

Here are some genres/topics I’m interested in:
    – Historical fiction with disabled characters (any time period; this is probably my biggest interest)
    – Queer fiction of any kind
    – Romance with one or both characters being disabled
    – Horror that deals with disability in some nuanced way
    – Adventure books with disabled characters
    – Any other suggestions you consider must-reads

I’m not really interested in fantasy, though I sometimes like sci-fi. I generally like books with a more serious/dramatic tone, rather than super light-hearted or slice-of-life.

I’d especially love if any of these things could be combined (ex: historical queer romance with disabled characters), but I know that may be a stretch.

I also don’t really care what kind of disabilities the characters have, although my own experiences are more with physical disabilities. I’m also interested in characters with chronic illness but would prefer to avoid stories about terminal illnesses for trigger reasons.

I hope this is enough info to go off of, feel free to ask questions that might help people give better recommendations. Thanks in advance!
