I read this book in grade 6ish from my school library and I remember devouring it in a couple sittings. I completely forgot about it until after entering adulthood and I so badly want to find the book again. I barely remember what it was about (see title of post, not a lot to go off, I know). I think I remember it having a colourful cover? Lots of blue if I’m not mistaken. Maybe some geometric/abstract shapes on it. Anyways I remember really enjoying it as a kid and I desperately want to reread it. If anyone knows what book I might be referring to please let me know.

Don’t know if it’s this as mpd isn’t there and I don’t remember the imaginary friend, but the autism and the blue colour with other colorful shapes reminds me of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time

If it’s not the book you’re trying to remember read it if you haven’t, it’s great 🙂

    2. Could it be Memoirs of an Imaginary Friend by Matthew Dicks? Here’s the summary:

Budo is lucky as imaginary friends go. He’s been alive for more than five years, which is positively ancient in the world of imaginary friends. But Budo feels his age and thinks constantly of the day when eight-year-old Max Delaney will stop believing in him. When that happens, Budo will disappear.

Max is different from other children. Some people say he has Asperger’s, but most just say he’s “on the spectrum.” None of this matters to Budo, who loves Max unconditionally and is charged with protecting him from the class bully, from awkward situations in the cafeteria, and even in the bathroom stalls. But he can’t protect Max from Mrs. Patterson, a teacher in the Learning Center who believes that she alone is qualified to care for this young boy.

When Mrs. Patterson does the unthinkable, it is up to Budo and a team of imaginary friends to save Max―and Budo must ultimately decide which is more important: Max’s happiness or his own existence.
