TLDR – I’m 150 pages in and it’s been horrible so far. Does it get better or I should give up?
The question is to someone who has gone beyond 150 pages of this book (ideally finished it).
I’m almost at the end of first section about colonialism and regardless of whether I agree with it or not, it’s been the most terse text I’ve ever read.
So far it’s just bunch of footnotes after every 3-4 sentences, pages after pages about what his favourite author/book says, and when he has to say anything, it’s all in obscure, 3-4 lines lengthy sentences – again filled with footnotes – as if author wants to hide behind those sources, or using those sources as a proof. And citing the source is ok, but it’s gone so out of hand that I don’t know what author has to say at all. All I see is lines/opinions taken from other books.
I’m getting a feeling that either he doesn’t have much to say, or having very bad communication skills (as far as the writing goes). So far the book sounds like a collection of data from various sources. Or some academic thesis where reader is expected to have immense knowledge of constitutional/international law, history of Christianity, and what not. Or author is trying to defend his position in law of court, rather that talking to readers (and frankly, I haven’t even seen a hint of what that position is). Time and again author reminds me of someone who recently learnt few obscure words, and using them everywhere and anywhere to impress others.
So is the worst part over and I should continue? Or worst is yet to come and I should give up?
