to clarify i just got back into reading. i don’t think i’ve read a full book that hasn’t been required for school since 5th grade. i enjoy reading but i just never drove myself to the library.
my favorite series in the world as a kid was the shadow children series by margaret haddix. i just finished the first book and plan to read the rest of them because i finished the first in a day. the big problem in finding new books is that nothing sounds good. i have a few more margaret haddix books on hold but they’re kids books and you can tell and i’m finishing them in only an hour or two.
lord of the flies looks okay, so does fahrenheit 451. so i guess something like that. i’m not super interested in magic or romance which seems to be two really big genres. i like the books to be fiction but also be realistic. i don’t care if there is romance in a book but i don’t like books that are purely about romance. these two things feel like they cross out 90% of young adult books. i also prefer series because i get wildly addicted to sets of characters but standalone books are also fine.
also definitely not necessary but i’m a guy and prefer when the main characters are also guys.

Running Out of Time by Margaret Haddix was the first book I ever read by myself! Here are a few suggestions you might like:
I’ll Give You the Sun by Jandy Nelson.
There is some romance in this but the main focus is on the twins relationship with each other and themselves
The Raven Cycle (first book: The Raven Boys) by Maggie Stiefvater
again, there is some romance (although not as much as the blurb would make you think) but it’s more of a character study
Junoniq by Kevin Henkes
When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead
I’m just gonna second Lord of the Flies. Never read Fahrenheit 451. Read the first two books of the Shadow Children though and think it would appeal to someone who likes Lord of the Flies as well.
Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card or The Martian by Andy Weir if you are open to sci-fi. Brave New World by Aldous Huxley. Angels and Demons (series) by Dan Brown.

Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry
