It’s not a zombie book, but Jeff Carlson’s Plague Year is a fast moving story with an artificial plague that centers around its origins. You get a great idea of the panic. It also has one of my favorite opening sentences for these kinds of books: “They ate Jorgensen first.”
David Wellington does a complete arc with zombies, but out of order because of a whole bunch of stuff with his publisher – the first book, Monster Island, happens mid apocalypse with our characters having to navigate a zombie-ridden Manhattan; Monster Nation jumps to the beginning; Monster Planet wraps it up.
